Yemen: President resigns

Following fighting in Sanaa, and a Houthi assault on the presidential palace, on 22 January President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi resigned, not long after the government of Prime Minister Khaled Bahah tendered its resignation, saying it did not want to be dragged into “an unconstructive political maze”. In a letter to the speaker of parliament, Hadi apologised to parliament and the Yemeni people for reaching a dead end. “We have suffered from numerous difficulties and the unwillingness of the main political actors to assume their responsibility to lead the country to calmer waters,” the letter said.
