While former president Ali Abdullah Saleh has been maintaining his alliance with the Houthis in Sanaa, one of the key players of his long presidency, born in the same village (but not related, as some earlier reports suggested), Major General Ali Mohsen Al-Ahmar is playing an elusive role in support of the Arab Coalition; he remains the subject of much speculation, as has been the case since he emerged as a key Saleh ally in pacifying the south and then accommodating radical Islamist ‘Afghans’.
