UAE turns peacemaker in the Horn of Africa

When the leaders of Eritrea and Ethiopia signed a joint declaration in the Eritrean capital Asmara on 9 July, they broke an impasse on one of the world’s longer-running conflicts. The UAE – and, to a lesser extent, Saudi Arabia – appeared to play a significant behind-the-scenes role, although officials have been reluctant to describe exactly what they did.There have been regular contacts between the UAE and Ethiopia over recent months.
