UAE pull-out raises risk of division among Yemen’s southern successionists

There are signs southern separatists are beginning to fragment as a result of the recent loss of UAE support, while indirect talks between President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi’s government and the Southern Transitional Council (STC) leadership drag into their second month in Jeddah. There have been suggestions that Qatar might be stepping into the vacuum created by the UAE’s withdrawal, to provide support for some factions. This would represent a significant turnaround for Doha, which left the Saudi-led coalition when it was hit by the GCC-3 boycott by Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE in June 2017.
