UAE confusion over Yemen ‘withdrawal’

A veteran Emirati minister has backtracked on his mid-June comment – apparently supported by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan (MBZ) – that the UAE had ended military operations in Yemen. Minister of state for foreign affairs Dr Anwar Gargash’s comment, “our standpoint today is clear: war is over for our troops”, was tweeted by MBZ and picked up by media organisations who reported that UAE forces would return home in the coming months. Just three days later Dr Anwar, who is mourning the recent death of his father, told Asharq Al-Awsat, “we are at war.
