UAE: US approves military exercises deal

The US State Department has approved a scheme to include UAE forces in a range of activities, including military exercises, aerial refuelling, airlift and ferry support, the provision of training aids, devices and munitions, as well as technical and logistical support services. The estimated cost of the package is $75m. The US has been impressed with the capabilities shown by the UAE forces in Yemen, not least a large amphibious landing in 2015 following the successful capture of Aden from the Houthis. In contrast, Washington is increasingly dismayed by the performance of the Saudi forces in the Yemen conflict.
