The turmoil in Sudan is a test of the UAE’s increasingly activist foreign policy, whose key goals – the maintenance of stability and the attrition of Al-Ikhwan Al-Muslimeen (Muslim Brotherhood or MB) – are once more to the fore. Saudi Arabia is the other main supporter of the Transitional Military Council (TMC), which is led by Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan Abdelrahman, but whose deputy chairman, the feared Janjaweed commander General Mohammed Hamdan Daglo (commonly known as Hemedti) is emerging as Sudan’s strongman.
