Saudi financier, arms dealer, gambler and inveterate networker Adnan Khashoggi died in London on 6 June, aged 81. Khashoggi was emblematic of Gulf wealth and conspicuous consumption in the 1970s and ‘80s, with yachts, personal planes and huge properties. His remained a name to conjure with, even though his power and wealth eaned after the 1990s. Khashoggi was often wrapped up in scandal. GSN and its predecessors reported on him for decades, noting in 1979 that his business career in the United States – where he made extensive investments in oil, cattle ranches and property – was “best described as controversial”
