Surge in US troop numbers

The United States has increased troop numbers in the region by more than 40% in recent months without explanation, according to figures from the Defense Manpower Data Center. The Department of Defense agency said the number of US armed forces personnel across the Gulf region increased by 34% from 34,972 in June to 46,859 by September; the vast majority of them – 37,720 – were stationed in Gulf Co-operation Council states.
