Sudanese junta lobbies Washington

United States national security advisor John Bolton tweeted on 3 June that the “unprovoked violence of Sudan’s security forces against peaceful demonstrators in Khartoum is abhorrent”. Sudan’s Transitional Military Council (TMC) junta is concerned to win support in Washington, where there is some momentum in Congress to take a hard line: House of Representatives’ foreign affairs committee chairman Eliot Engel in late June asked secretary of state Mike Pompeo and treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin to sanction the RSF.
