South Africa seeks more power from cross-border coal

The Department of Energy (DoE) issued a new determination in April stating that 3,750MW will be procured from cross-border coal power projects, as set out in the 2010 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). However, contrary to the IRP – which stated that the new capacity would be added between 2025 and 2030 – the determination calls for new capacity “as soon as reasonably possible”, and relaxes constraints around how the new power plants should be procured.
