South Africa: Russians to offer financing, technology for nuclear

Issue 318 - 25 Feb 2016 | 3 minute read

Russian nuclear parastatal Rosatom has said that developing fuel-cycle technology in South Africa could be part of its bid in the forthcoming procurement of 9,600MW of nuclear power.Speaking on the sidelines of the Africa Energy Indaba conference, regional vice-president for sub-Saharan Africa Viktor Polikarpov said Rosatom was confident it would win because it was the best candidate and not because there was any prior agreement between the two presidents. He added that Russian financing would form a key part of Rosatom’s proposal, with the weak rouble giving the company a major advantage over its competitors.
