South Africa: Nuclear industry RfI

Issue 418 - 26 Jun 2020 | 3 minute read

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) issued a request for information (RfI) on 14 June to assess nuclear power options for a 2.5GW programme. The programme, for which procurement is not currently anticipated until after 2030, is outlined in the country’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), published last year. South Africa’s nuclear policy is still guided by the Nuclear Energy Policy, which was published in 2008, setting out the ambition of establishing a fully integrated domestic nuclear value chain, as well as specifying that both pressurised water reactor (PWR) and pebble bed modular reactor (PBMR) technologies would be used.
