South Africa: New captive power framework moves closer

A new framework to facilitate investment in captive generation on a much larger scale appears imminent after mineral resources and energy minister Gwede Mantashe told the Africa Mining Indaba conference in Cape Town on 3 February that the government was gazetting a revised schedule of the Electricity Regulation Act. Mantashe’s comments followed a speech by President Cyril Ramaphosa at the Business Economic Indaba last month in which he said that policy issues around captive power would be addressed.
