South Africa: MPRDA confusion
Issue 376

| 2 minute read
Energy minister Jeff Radebe has indicated he wants to see the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Amendment (MPRDA) bill passed by parliament, despite suggestions by mineral resources minister Gwede Mantashe that it should be dropped. The bill, first published for comment in December 2012, has been before the National Council of Provinces since November 2016. Speaking to parliament’s mineral resources portfolio committee in August, Mantashe suggested dropping the bill and allowing the mining industry to be governed by the existing Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act.
