South Africa’s new government faces the same problems

President Cyril Ramaphosa on 29 May announced his new cabinet, merging the energy and mineral resources ministries and appointing political heavyweight and former miner Gwede Mantashe as minister. Mantashe has served as chairman of the South African Communist Party and as secretary-general of the African National Congress during the troubled presidential transition from Thabo Mbeki to Jacob Zuma. The move saw SA’s longest serving minster, Jeff Radebe, leave the government as Ramaphosa cut the size of the cabinet.
