An updated version of South Africa’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) – the energy mix planning document that guides and constrains procurement – has been approved for the first time since 2010. The IRP is meant to be updated every two years but has become a lightning rod for arguments about the future of electricity generation and coal mining in the country, as well as being drawn into controversy over state capture.
