Sonelgaz: Algerian utility adds to blacklist

Issue 288 - 10 Nov 2014 | 1 minute read

Drawn into Algeria’s long-running corruption investigations, Sonelgaz has added more companies to its blacklist of suppliers who are no longer allowed to bid. The blacklist comprised 37 firms (eight foreign) as of end-October. Recent entries include China’s Hebei Xinhua Electrical Equipment, local operator Hammoud Kamel and Italy’s Saipem, which is at the centre of corruption investigations. Canada’s SNC-Lavalin was blacklisted in 2013 (see Governance and compliance). Meanwhile Sonelgaz is looking for another partner to develop its much-hyped solar panel plant in the Algiers industrial zone of Rouiba, following the June 2013 cancellation of its venture with Germany’s Centrotherm Photovoltaics and Kinetics.
