Somaliland approves controversial UAE base

Following months of negotiations, the government of the self-declared Republic of Somaliland has approved plans for a UAE military base near the port of Berbera (GSN 1024/5). The decision was reached after a parliamentary vote on 12 February in which 144 MPs voted in favour, two voted against, two abstained and nine other opponents were escorted out of the chamber by soldiers.
