Saudi Arabia: Where have all the Mutawa gone?

Members of the Saudi religious establishment have come under pressure from the welter of social changes promised by Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman’s reform programme. A public expression of the shift: the mutawa – bearded old gentlemen equipped with canes for tapping the ankles of ladies showing an inch too much leg in public – have disappeared from Riyadh’s shopping malls.
