Saudi Arabia: Western allies grapple with arms sales dilemma

Just days after Germany had backed down from its previous ban on arms sales to Saudi Arabia – a move which allowed for the resumption of full diplomatic ties – outrage over the murder of Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul forced Chancellor Angela Merkel’s administration into a rapid, second U-turn. Berlin has suspended arms sales to Riyadh once again, pending the outcome of investigations into the killing.
