Saudi Arabia: Riyadh mends fences with Sisi’s Egypt, but the potential for rivalry remains

Commentators in Egypt and Saudi Arabia have been celebrating the relationship between the two countries being put “back on track”, as a headline in Cairo daily Al-Ahram recently put it. There is a clear intention from both sides to gloss over the disagreements which led to Saudi Arabia suspending crude oil shipments to Egypt in October and to instead focus on common interests. During the Arab Summit in March, Saudi foreign minister Adel Al-Jubeir emphasised “the depth and firmness of the historic ties binding the two countries in all fields.”
