| 1 minute read
A court in Saudi Arabia sentenced Shiite cleric Nimr Al-Nimr to death on 15 October, his family said. Al-Nimr was arrested in July 2012, and accused of instigating unrest and undermining national unity. His detention provoked large protests in the Eastern Province, and there is likely to be outcry at his sentence.Sheikh Nimr has discouraged violent opposition to the government, but often spoken out against the ruling Al-Saud, suggesting in 2009 that the Eastern Province, where most Saudi Shiites are concentrated, should secede.
