Saudi Arabia: Naval deal with Spain highlights localisation issues

Saudi Arabian Military Industries (Sami) has formed a joint venture (JV) with Spain’s Navantia to help deliver the five Avante 2200 class corvettes recently ordered for the Royal Saudi Navy. The JV, announced on 19 July, will focus on areas such as combat system integration and installation. SAMI chairman Ahmed Al-Khateeb said it would localise more than 60% of the ships’ combat systems works. That fits in with a key element of the government’s Vision 2030 programme of 50% localisation of defence equipment spending by 2030.
