US defence secretary Ashton Carter arrived in Riyadh on 19 April – one day before President Barack Obama (see GCC Risk management report) – and had a meeting with Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman (MBS). According to Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook, they discussed issues such as countering violent extremism and checking Iran’s “destabilising” activities in the region.On 11 April MBS made a short visit to the UAE. He was greeted on arrival by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Zayed (MBZ).
