Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto arrived in Riyadh on 17 January for talks with King Salman Bin Abdelaziz. During his visit, nine agreements were signed, on areas as diverse as tourism, the fight against transnational organised crime and the energy sector – where Mexico, like other oil producers, is suffering from the slump in crude prices (it has observer status in Opec). Nieto was accompanied by a delegation including foreign minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu and the secretaries of energy and economy. Mexican ambassador Arturo Trejo noted that Nieto was making the first visit by a Mexican head of state to the kingdom in 40 years.
