Whatever went on behind closed doors during US secretary of state John Kerry’s fence-mending visit to Riyadh on 3 and 4 November, both sides made a significant effort to give public reassurances that the Saudi-US relationship was as sturdy as ever. In the wake of Saudi Arabia’s evident frustration with US policy, and its dramatic rejection of a United Nations Security Council seat, Kerry extended his scheduled tour of the Middle East, Europe and North Africa, and flew into Riyadh Airbase Airport on 3 November, where he was met by foreign minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal.
