At a time of brutality in many corners of the Middle East, the resilience of the Iran nuclear deal this year offers a glint of hope that diplomacy can, at least sometimes, overcome the opportunity for violence. US secretary of state John Kerry had some insightful reflections on the deal and the potential for peace versus war when in London at end-October to receive the Chatham House Prize, an annual award from the venerable London think-tank, for his role in brokering the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Iranian foreign affairs minister Mohammad Javid Zarif was the co-winner.
