Saudi Arabia/Iran: Rivals reinforce air defences
The United States has significantly upgraded its offensive and defensive systems in Saudi Arabia, prompting a response in kind from Iran. While comment has flowed on US President Donald Trump’s unwillingness to launch offensive operations against Iran after the attacks on Saudi oil facilities, the US reinforcement of its forces in the kingdom has been less remarked on. Washington has deployed a radar-defeating F22 squadron to Prince Sultan Airbase south of Riyadh and an F15 squadron to Dhahran, with a further two Patriot batteries and a THAAD anti-ballistic missile battery added to the existing Saudi air defence system.
