Foreign minister Saud Al-Faisal told reporters on 13 May that he had sent an invitation to visit Saudi Arabia to his Iranian counterpart, Mohammed Javad Zarif. “We sent an invitation to the foreign minister to visit Saudi Arabia, but this intention to visit has not become a fact… But at any time he sees fit to come, we are ready to receive him,” he said at a press conference in Riyadh, adding that Saudi Arabia was willing to talk to Iran. Iranian deputy foreign minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian was quoted by Iranian state news agency Irna the next day as saying Iran had not received a written invitation, but that the “visit was on the agenda”.
