Riyadh and Abu Dhabi bolster support for Sahel region
Saudi Arabia has reportedly agreed to donate $100m to support an anti-terrorism initiative in West Africa, in a stepping-up of Gulf military links to the region. The pledge follows a July 2017 decision by five West African countries – Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger; collectively known as the G5 Sahel – to create a joint military force to tackle terrorism, cross-border crime and human trafficking in their region.
