Researcher released on bail in UAE

British academic Matt Hedges was released on bail on 30 October, in a surprise move by the UAE authorities. Hedges had previously appeared in court on 24 October in Abu Dhabi on charges that he had been spying for the UK. The 31-year-old academic was arrested in Dubai in early May after a two-week field trip to conduct research for his PhD at Durham University in the UK. In a statement, his wife Daniela Tejada said she welcomed the development but pointed out that “Matt is not fully free yet”.
