Region: Oman’s fighter jet upgrade kick-starts 2018 arms deals

Oman is to spend $62m to upgrade the software and communications equipment on its 23-strong fleet of F-16 fighter jets, according to a notice published by the US State Department on 5 January. The US government last year approved almost $27bn worth of major arms sales to the Gulf, according to data compiled by the Forum on the Arms Trade. This was led by a $15bn deal to sell Thaad missile defence systems to Saudi Arabia.
