Qatar is pushing ahead with plans to increase its natural gas production amid growing competition from a number of liquefied natural gas (LNG) competitors, as well as market and geopolitical risks. Work is expected to accelerate after Qatar Petroleum (QP) announced in May that it had awarded a design contract to US engineering firm McDermott for offshore jacks for the new North Field gas expansion project. QP called the design contract a significant step towards awarding of an engineering, procurement, fabrication and installation (EPCI) contract by end-year, so that drilling can start in 2019.
