Qatar cabinet: beyond a family affair

Qatar’s reshuffled Council of Ministers (analysed in Politics) is notable for its lack of ruling family faces. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani’s new cabinet boasts only four Al-Thani members (including the ruler) out of 18 positions – and the current crop of ministers who do have royal pedigree tend to be quite distantly related to the emir. Tamim thus seems keen to avoid adding to the ranks of cousins, uncles and other relatives that hold government positions – a trend all too apparent in several neighbours.
