Qatar’s interest in African affairs was reaffirmed when Karim Wade, politician and businessman son of former Senegalese president Abdoulaye Wade, left for Doha on a royal jet following his release from prison on the night of 23 June. He had been pardoned by his father’s former premier turned rival, President Macky Sall, following what analysts say were intense political manoeuvrings in Dakar.
