Qatar: Turkey ties

Issue 978 - 03 Oct 2014 | 1 minute read

Qatari press reports have been speculating that Turkey is likely to be Qatar’s Year of Culture partner for 2015. The two countries have become increasingly close, as their support for the Muslim Brotherhood distances them from other regional players. Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan (formerly prime minister), was back in Doha on 15 September and, after talks and a lunch in his honour, he and Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad laid the foundation stone for a so-called Turkish Village in Doha. The Year of Culture is a Qatar Museums initiative; in 2014, the partner is Brazil, following Britain in 2013 and Japan in 2012.
