Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani formally opened the IAAF World Athletics Championships on the Doha corniche on 27 September. The competition, which ran until 6 October, faced widespread criticism for the tiny crowds that came to watch the events at the air-conditioned Khalifa International Stadium, amid widespread disinterest from locals. Marathon runners and long-distance walkers had to contend with high temperatures and humidity outside the stadium, even though their events were scheduled for midnight and later, causing many to drop out of the races.
