Qatar: Money for Darfur

Issue 978 - 03 Oct 2014 | 1 minute read

Qatar has promised a grant of $88.5m to a fund overseen by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and involved in reconstruction efforts in Darfur. Foreign minister Khalid Bin Mohammed Al-Attiyah attended the signing ceremony in New York on 21 September. A UNDP statement said the grant would cover half of the requirements for immediate needs in its Darfur Development Strategy, which envisions total financing of $7.2bn over six years. Qatar has been highly involved in efforts to end conflict in Darfur, both through financial support and mediation. A Darfur peace agreement was signed in Doha in 2011.
