Qatar Rail (QR) has awarded a turnkey contract for rolling stock and railway systems for the first phase of the Doha Metro to a five-member consortium led by Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and including Mitsubishi Corp, Hitachi, Kinki Sharyo and Thales Canada. QR made the announcement on 18 February, the day before Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani went to Japan on an official visit aimed at boosting co-operation. AFP quoted an MHI spokesman as saying the deal was worth $3.36bn.
