Qatar: Abdullah Bin Hamad

The ruler’s half-brother, deputy emir Sheikh Abdullah Bin Hamad, has been the subject of recent speculation among Doha-watchers over his relations with Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani and positioning in the political balance at the top of the Qatari state. Then aged 26, Abdullah Bin Hamad was appointed deputy emir by Tamim in November 2014 and subsequently became head of Qatar Investment Authority (QIA). However, while these titles should place Abdullah at the commanding heights of public life, it is thought that Tamim will name one of his sons as heir apparent when the time is right (the eldest is only seven).
