Qatar: Wintershall pulls out

Issue 994 - 05 Jun 2015 | 3 minute read

Germany’s Wintershall is stopping its activities in Qatar. The upstream subsidiary of BASF, which in 2013 made Qatar’s first new gas discovery in over 40 years, announced it would return Block 4 North on 25 May, because of Qatar’s refusal to give it access to the local infrastructure it would need to make development of the new field economically viable. In a 20 May statement, Wintershall – Germany’s largest oil and gas producer, which had already relinquished licences to two other Qatari blocks – said its office in Doha would be closed; its regional focus will turn to the UAE.
