In official discourse, the authorities have sought to downplay the influence of tribes on the political scene; there is rarely any comment on tribal matters in the local press, nor are pronouncements of tribal leaders carried. Yet the social importance of tribal ties has persisted despite widespread rural migration to the big cities and an official government discourse that emphasises the equality of all citizens. Pointing to recognition of their continuing importance, tribal leaders are still recognised with the honorific title of sheikh.
