Sultan Qaboos Bin Said Al-Said was a dynamic 29-year-old when, with help from former Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and other former British military colleagues, he overthrew his father, Sultan Said Bin Taimur, ruler for 38 years of the then decrepit Muscat and Oman. Said Bin Taimur went into exile in London, where he died several years later, his style of rule not mourned as Oman had “languished in political and economic stagnation; indifferent to progress and reactionary in outlook”, it was a country where “although oil began to be exported in 1967, very little was done in the way of development”.
