Oman/Region: Muscat weighs up multiple regional and domestic challenges

The twin crises of the coronavirus pandemic and oil price crash bring added danger to the already difficult domestic and regional circumstances confronting Oman, as it settles in to the new style of Sultan Haitham Bin Tariq Al-Said. The concerns are sufficient for one prominent constitutional expert Ahmed Al-Mukhaini, to opine in a recent paper for the Gulf States Center that for Haitham to bring Oman through these difficulties, he will have overcome challenges comparable to those faced by Sultan Qaboos Bin Said Al-Said in his first five years in office – when he had to deal with the Dhofar Rebellion and the need to rapidly modernise the state.
