Tehran tries to cement Baghdad ties

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi has made his first foreign trip since taking office in early May, although an effort to find a delicate balance between competing regional interests did not go entirely to plan. Kadhimi was due to visit Riyadh on 20 July and then travel to Tehran the next day, followed by a trip to the United States in the coming weeks. However, King Salman Bin Abdelaziz’s ill health meant the Saudi leg had to be postponed, so Kadhimi’s first foray as premier was to Iran.
