Nigeria power update: Modest progress undermined by erratic gas supplies

Following the commissioning of the 1,074MW Alaoji, 561MW Calabar and 750MW Olorunsogo II National Integrated Power Projects (NIPPs) in early 2015, installed on-grid capacity has risen to approximately 12.8GW. Although this meets peak demand reported, the poor performance of the Kainji, Jebba and Shiroro hydroelectric plants, long-term neglect of former state-owned thermal plants, which their new private owners are only just beginning to reverse, and major gas shortages mean actual generation has fluctuated between a low of 1,327MW in May this year and an all-time high of 4,748MW in August.
