The award of a seismic contract in the Gongola Basin and a mid-October visit to northern governors by Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) group managing director Maikanti Baru is intended to relaunch exploration in Gongola – part of the Upper Benue Trough – and other frontier basins in the north-east. The contract was awarded to a joint venture of NNPC’s Integrated Data Service Ltd subsidiary and China National Petroleum Corporation’s Bureau for Geophysical Prospecting (BGP). NNPC said the venture was mobilising to Alkakeri, Darazo and Misau in Bauchi State to acquire around 500km2 of 3D seismic data in a first phase.
