| 1 minute read
A consignment of illicit Somali charcoal destined for Kuwait was seized in Gulf waters by the Kuwait Coastguard working with other regional naval forces on 17 May. Charcoal exports from Somalia have been banned by the United Nations Security Council since 2012, as they are used by Islamist insurgent group Al-Shabaab as a source of revenue. It is believed to be the first seizure in the Gulf of Somali charcoal.
