Kuwait continues to jail and detain individuals accused of insulting the emir or other Gulf nations. Following the jailing of opposition politician Musallam Al-Barrak in mid-June for criticising Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, Kuwaiti media said the criminal court had sentenced Rana Al-Sadoun to three years in prison with hard labour on 21 June because she repeated Al-Barrak’s speech and thereby insulted the emir. Al-Sadoun is a founder of the National Committee for Monitoring Violations, an organisation that observes protests and arrests and helps those in need of lawyers. According to Reuters, she is understood to be living in Lebanon.
